s03e22 The karaoke curse

Klára Kolonits

I’ve mentioned several times why I do not support karaoke-based study. In today’s episode, I want to return to this topic and show in what way it may be causing problems in the long run. I consider the basic musical education very important, regardless of the genre you want to specialise in. As a classically trained bel canto singer I once had to learn György Kurtág’s atonal, a cappella song cycle in a few weeks. How did I aprroach it, what was the work like? How was the concert (that was also live broadcasted)? And what is the foundation I could build in, the basic music education that allowed me to sing it without hurting my voice that is used to entirely different style?
